Almost three quarters of Australians believe being able to be themselves around a new partner is the top priority.

Less than 8 per cent gave looks the top billing when choosing a new love interest, a survey of 1000 people found.

Almost 41 per cent of men rated romance and passion as the No.1 thing they looked for, ahead of fun (almost 35 per cent), security (23 per cent) and status (1 per cent).

Overall, almost 58 per cent of people picked security and comfort as being the most important consideration when making a strong commitment to a relationship, like moving in together, getting engaged or starting a family.

The doctor and author said that meant financial security, but also the belief that the other person was going to be faithful and there was not going to be too much drama.

The survey found most people can cope when their partner loses their job, works long hours or their relationship lacks spark.

But the No.1 deal breaker for 70 per cent of respondents was when there was more drama in their relationship than joy.

More than 82 per cent of Australians would choose their relationship ahead of their career.

Couple the lady 25, and man, 21, agreed that being able to be themselves was important in their relationship.

"I like someone who can make me laugh and feel comfortable and, yeah, you do that," she said to her partner of two years.

The study was conducted on behalf of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to coincide with yesterday's release of romantic comedy on DVD and Blu ray.
